You put your lip colour on, it looks exactly how you want it to, and then a few hours later it has started to creep beyond the lip line.

Feathering can happen with all kinds of lip products, especially creamier or glossier formulas.

The good news is that you don’t need to give up lip colour altogether. Usually, a few small changes to how you prep and apply it can make a big difference.

Why does lipstick bleed?

Lip colour tends to move when there is extra slip around the mouth.

That might come from:

• Lip balm
• Moisturiser
• Facial oils
• Glossy or emollient lip formulas
• Rich skincare sitting close to the lip line

The skin around the mouth also moves constantly throughout the day, which can make softer formulas more likely to travel.

The finer lines around the mouth can also give colour somewhere to migrate into. That doesn’t mean you need a completely matte lip. It just means the prep and application matter a little more.

1. Prep your lips earlier

Hydrated lips can help colour apply more smoothly, but applying balm immediately before lipstick can sometimes create too much slip.

Instead, apply your Superfood Lip Dew or preferred lip balm earlier in your routine.

Give it time to settle in. Then, before applying colour, gently blot away any excess product.

Pay particular attention to the skin just outside the lip line. You want the lips to feel comfortable, but not overly glossy or slippery before you start.

2. Use lip liner, even if you don’t want a “lined” look

A lip pencil doesn’t have to create a bold, obvious outline. Used softly, it can simply help define the edge of the lip and give your lip colour a cleaner boundary.

Apply it directly along your natural lip line using small, light strokes. Then gently fill in more of the lip with the pencil. This creates an even base underneath your lip colour and can help the overall look wear more evenly.

3. Choose your lip formula with wear in mind

Different lip finishes behave differently.

Creamy and glossy formulas usually have more movement because that slip is part of what makes them feel comfortable and look shiny.

If you want both longevity and comfort, try layering formulas.

Apply a stain first and allow it to settle. Then add a small amount of balm or gloss to the centre of the lips rather than coating the entire lip line.

4. Apply thin layers

More product isn’t necessarily better. A thick coat gives excess product more opportunity to move throughout the day.

Instead, try:

Apply one thin layer.

Blot gently with a tissue.

Apply a second thin layer.

Building colour gradually gives you more control and removes some of the excess product that might otherwise migrate. It also tends to create a more even finish.

5. Keep the skin around the lip line less slippery

If feathering is a regular issue for you, take a look at the skincare or makeup sitting immediately around your mouth.

A very rich moisturiser, face oil or dewy base can sometimes make lip products more mobile.

You don’t need to skip skincare. Simply give it time to absorb before applying your lip colour.

You can also use a tiny amount of [Mineral Primer] around the lip area before makeup to create a smoother, less slippery base.

Keep the amount very light. The aim is not to create a heavy layer around the mouth.

What about powder around the lips?

A small amount of powder can also help if your lip colour regularly travels.

Use a clean, small brush and lightly press a little translucent or setting powder onto the skin just outside the lip line.

You only need the smallest amount. Too much powder can make the area look dry and draw more attention to natural skin texture.

Think subtle, not baked.

The easiest low-maintenance option

If you don’t want to think about liner, blotting and touch-ups every time you wear lip colour, a Lip Stain can be a simpler option.

Apply it to clean, dry lips and allow the colour to settle.

Because the finish is generally lighter than a creamy lipstick or gloss, there is less product sitting on top of the lips to move around.

You can absolutely still wear them.

Don’t overdraw if feathering is your main concern

For everyday wear, a softly defined natural lip line is often the easiest option.

If you want the simple version, try this:

Prep early.
Hydrate your lips, then blot away excess product before applying colour.

Line the natural border.
Use a pencil close to your lip or lipstick shade.

Fill in with pencil.
This creates a more even base underneath your lip colour.

Apply thin layers.
One layer, blot, then add another if needed.

Keep gloss toward the centre.
Avoid loading too much emollient product around the edges.

That’s usually enough to make your lip colour feel far more manageable throughout the day.

You don’t have to give up lip colour
