How to Hydrate Dehydrated Skin (Even If You're Oily) | Lust Minerals
Dehydrated skin is one of the most misunderstood skin conditions in beauty. Most people assume it only affects dry skin types but dehydration can happen to oily, combination, normal, even acne-prone skin. And the fix is exactly the same regardless of your skin type.
Here's everything you need to know about identifying dehydrated skin and restoring it properly.
Dehydrated Skin vs Dry Skin: What's the Difference?
Dry skin is a skin type. It produces less sebum (oil) and needs richer, more emollient products to compensate. Dehydrated skin is a skin condition. It's a lack of water (not oil in the skin) and it can happen to any skin type at any time. Oily skin can absolutely be dehydrated. The signs of dehydration: tightness after cleansing, dull or flat-looking skin, increased sensitivity, fine lines that look more obvious than usual, and skin that feels rough despite having an oily surface.
What Causes Dehydrated Skin?
The most common causes are: over-cleansing or using stripping cleansers, not drinking enough water, air conditioning and heating (both dry out the environment), using actives like retinol or AHAs without adequate moisturisation, and UV exposure.
The skin loses approximately 300–400ml of water through transepidermal water loss (TEWL) every day. Your skincare routine's job is to help it hold onto as much of that as possible.
How to Fix Dehydration Skin
Step 1: Switch to a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. If your cleanser is leaving your skin feeling tight, it's damaging your skin barrier and accelerating water loss. The Lust Minerals Superfood Gel Cleanser is designed to clean without stripping, suitable for all skin types including oily.
Step 2: Apply a Hyaluronic Acid serum on damp skin. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, it draws water into the skin and holds it there. The key is applying it to slightly damp skin so it has water to draw from. Apply the Lust Minerals Hyaluronic Acid Serum immediately after cleansing, before your skin dries completely.
Step 3: Lock it in with a moisturiser. A serum alone won’t fix dehydration, you need a moisturiser over the top to seal the hydration in. If you have oily or combination skin, use the Probiotic Moisturiser+ for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisture. If you have dry or mature skin, use the Firming Peptide Moisturiser for a richer, more supportive barrier.
Step 4: Mist throughout the day. The Lust Minerals Hydration Glow Mist is a game-changer for people who work in air-conditioned environments or spend time outdoors. A few spritzes throughout the day refreshes the skin and adds an extra layer of hydration without disturbing your makeup.
What to Avoid
Avoid cleansers with sulphates, toners with alcohol, and anything with synthetic fragrance, all of these accelerate transepidermal water loss and make dehydration worse. Also avoid over-exfoliating. AHAs and BHAs are excellent for skin health but using them too frequently on already-dehydrated skin will make things worse before they get better.
How Long Until You See Results?
With the right routine, most people notice a significant improvement in skin hydration within 2 weeks. The tightness resolves first, followed by improved texture and brightness.
